  1. The blue tit was seen leaving the nest at 6.06am. Three eggs were in clear view, possibly more buried?

  2. This is very exciting. I wonder how long eggs take to hatch. Maybe a student will know the answer and post it on here.

  3. as anyone noticed the fact that bluey is always up and out of the nest just after 6 am every day, i never realised how much birds were creatures of habit, is it to do with sunrise/sunset times?

  4. Have any of the eggs hatched or am I just seeing a group of feathers? It is 7:30 pm. I think my eyes are playing tricks on me.

  5. There could be more eggs hidden. Typically blue tits lay 10 to 12 eggs.Incubation Days: 12 – 16Wow! Does this mean we might see chicks next week?I am soooooooooo excited!

  6. gemmaNo, they haven't hatched yet. We will have to wait until Mum starts sitting on the eggs properly.woodyUnfortunately I don't think we will see a full clutch of eggs because a Tree Sparrow destroyed some, before we made the nest box hole too small for him to get in.

  7. Our blue tit has spent quite alot of time in the nest box this afternoon sitting on the eggs. I wonder whether she is now going to start incubating the eggs full time.

  8. The blue tit must really like the bird box for i watched her have a fight with another bird. For i go to stretton school. It was really funny and everybody in mrs badhams class laughed ohh and in trampoline practice.

  9. We had two blue tits in the box at one point during the afternoon. It is not known whether the 2nd blue tit is friend or foe! Maybe it's the male returning after all the hard work has been done:)

  10. When Birdie took a flight at 7 30 there were five eggs clearly visible. Looks like shes settling down to brood!!

  11. She really looks like she is incubating the eggs nearly full time now. 7 am – 8 am:Sitting on the nest until 7.25 am.left nest at 7.25 am leaving 5 eggs uncovered.Returned to sit on the eggs 7.39 am.A male blue tit visits to feed the female at 7.56 am.

  12. After a lot of sitting around early this morning, the female blue tit has made only occasional visits for the rest of the morning, mainly to rearrange the nest. Maybe she was just pretending to be broody to get breakfast in bed!

  13. Left the nest again at 7.18am, leaving 6 eggs neatly arranged. She returned to sit on them 8 minutes later.

  14. The male bird was seen visiting the box to feed the female several times throughout the day. She spent less time away from the nest.

  15. There are three eggs in the bird box that a bluetit has laidThree must have been hidden, you can see all six now.

  16. Waiting eagerly to see when the baby chicks are going to hatch! =) It's very exciting, and I think I can now see 6 eggs in clear view.

  17. I've not seen the male blue tit visiting whilst the Birdcam has been working over the weekend. Maybe he visits earlier in the day?

  18. been watching the peregrin falcon at derby cathedral all morning, breaking news literally ive just seen the first chick hatch, approximately 11am what a cute little ball of white fluff.

  19. Looking at this birdcam and others, I notice that the nest area tends to be at the back of the box away from the entrance hole. Would this be to keep the eggs/chicks away from predators?

  20. The blue tits have pecked at the entrance hole before. However, today the female has hammered away at the hole from the inside for extended periods of time.

  21. has anyone any idea as to when the eggs are due to hatch? i can't wait surely it must be soon

  22. impatient birdwatcher said…has anyone any idea as to when the eggs are due to hatch? i can't wait surely it must be soonThe female blue tit looked as if she was incubating the eggs from the 2nd-4th May, the 4th being when the last egg was laid. It will hopefully take approximately 12-16 days for the chicks to hatch, so we might be able to see them from Wednesday next week. I hope they hatch soon, because I personally cannot wait! =D

  23. mummy bluey has been quite fidgety today, keeps looking down at the eggs,i wonder if, like the peregrine falcons, the chicks are starting to vocalise inside the eggs ready for breaking out.perhaps she's just impatient like me, wanting them to hurry up

  24. the wait is over here is the exciting bit – watching mother nature at its best. i saw the male blue tit feed the mother at about 4.30pm, she then fed her two hatched chicks and sat back on top of them to continue her brooding of the other eggs. i beleive that when blue tits are born they are naked and blind, but ive never seen it ,until now that is! what an amazing biology lesson for the children

  25. happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday little birdie Happy birthday to you!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. The female blue tit has continued to brood the chicks to keep them warm and also to incubate the remaining eggs. She occasionally leaves them home alone to get food. The male blue tit continues to bring in food to the nest.

  27. Still 5 chicks and 1 egg first thing this morning. By lunchtime the egg was no longer visible. Viewing the live video confirmed there was no longer an egg but only 5 chicks could be seen at any one time.

  28. The baby blue tits are bald but seem to be getting tufts of fluff above their eyes and they still haven't opened them yet.

  29. The female blue tit spends a lot of time digging around upside down in the well of the nest. Is this to keep the well deep enough to stop the chicks moving around the nest?

  30. The female digging down in to the nest is thought to be to keep the shape of the nest and is similar to what she does when nest building. However, it is also thought this has a role in setting the chicks back in the nest if one has been slightly displaced and this certainly seems to be a benefit of the behaviour. Other observers have commented that this could also be the female searching for faecal sacs or nest parasites.

  31. Despite the cold, wet and blustery weather, the adult birds have been very busy bringing in food for the chicks. The female spends time brooding the chicks to keep them warm.

  32. TODAY I SAW ONE OF THE CHICKS OUT OF THE WELL STOOD IN THE CORNER OF THE NEST BOX,AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS MUMMY BIRD UNTIL SHE CAME BACK IN AND PUSHED THE CHICK BACK IN WITH ITS SIBLINGS, IT APPEARS THAT A COUPLE OF THEM ARE SUBSTANTIALLY BIGGER THAN THE OTHERS AND THEY ARE ALL GAINING MORE INDEPENDANCE BY THE DAY

  33. The chicks are so big now, that when the adult female is brooding them, you can always see bits of the chick poking out.
