Well Dressing – David and Goliath
This year the theme for the well dressing is ‘Children in bible stories’. The story of David his victory of Goliath is one of the most popular in the Old Testament.
The children made drawings of the David and Goliath story and these have been incorporated into the design for the well dressing. We have used natural materials to make the well dressing. The frame was brought to school for us so that, during the week, everyone had a chance to contribute and see it develop.
The central panel features David using his sling and stone against the mighty Goliath. The side panels show some of the scenes and items from the story – the camps/ tents of the opposing armies: the sheep and harp associated with David and the river where David found the stones for his sling.
The story of David and Goliath
David was a shepherd boy who lived in Israel. He took care of sheep. God chose David to take care of the Jewish people. David played the harp. When the king of Israel was tired of fighting in the war, he asked David to play for him. David’s music made him feel better.
One day a terrible giant named Goliath started bragging to his soldier friends that none of the Jews would dare to fight him. And he was right. The Jewish soldiers were all afraid of big Goliath. What would happen to the Jewish people?
Then little David said: “I’ll fight Goliath. God will help me.” He went and found some stones for his slingshot.
The giant just laughed at him. David put a stone in his sling and flung it. The stone hit big Goliath on the head. Then David killed him with his sword. All of Goliath’s friends ran away. The little shepherd boy had saved the Jewish people!

Sport Relief Mile!
On Friday 18th March the Stretton Handley pupils, parents, staff and some members of the local community went down to the Jubilee playing fields to take part in a sponsored mile in order to raise money for sport relief.
The weather held out long enough for over 80 people to take part in completing the mile, some running, some walking, (some people getting a lift!).
Everyone appeared to enjoy the event and everyone did a fantastic job as over £1000 has been raised for Sport Relief! This is such a fantastic effort from a school of our size so well done to everyone that donated and collected!

Well done Stretton Handley!
Rugby Megafest Champions!
On Thursday 10th March 2016 the year 5 and 6 children went to Tupton Hall for the afternoon to participate in the ‘Rugby Megafest’. The children participated in 8 different skills based events including: rugby rounders, catch the tag and rugby scarecrow. 16 different schools were at the event and although it was fun, skills based and non competitive, there was a winner.
Unbeknown to the schools the leaders running each event were marking the schools out of 10 for there engagement, sportsmanship, effort and ability. Once all 8 stations had been completed the schools were given an overall mark out of 80 and Stretton Handley received the highest mark making us champions of the Rugby Megafest!
The children had a fantastic time and now have a big trophy on display at the entrance of our school. Well done to all the year 5 and 6 children that took part.

Children in Need fund raising ‘Ramble’ Friday 13th November 1.20pm
Donate £1.00 or more and join us on a ramble for Children in Need. We are organising a ramble for children and parents of Stretton Handley. All children will be taking part and we are asking for a minimum donation per child of £1.00 for Children In Need. If you would like to join us please complete the slip attached to the letter sent home to sign up.
We will be leaving school at 1.20 pm. Mr Cooke has plotted the route and children need to wear appropriate clothing. We thought it be fun for children to dress for an outdoor hike – trousers tucked into long socks, walking boots or wellies, jackets with hood, small ruck sack with water bottle, biscuit snack, bobble/ coloured or Pudsey hat etc. The walk is approx. 1 mile and finishes back at school. ( Children accompanied by an adult may go home early if we return before 3.30pm)
Countryfile’s Matt Baker shares his tips on prepping for a walk in town or country –
- Work out how long your walk will take and arrange your set-off time accordingly.
- Check the weather right up until the moment you set off. Remember: there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices.
- Kit yourself out with the right clothing and footwear. If it’s a chilly day, wear thick socks or double up for extra padding. It’s always a good idea to take an extra pair too, just in case those boots aren’t as waterproof as you thought! Make sure your walkers wear jackets with hood. Turn a bad forecast into part of the fun.
- Take supplies with you – particularly if it’s a long walk. Cereal and fruit bars are a good source of energy. Make sure you’ve got plenty of water too.
- When planning your route mark potential pit stops.
- Take a first aid kit.
- Other essential items: a pack of hand wipes and a couple of plastic carrier bags (always handy). Chuck a hat and pair of gloves in the bottom of your bag even if you think you won’t need them.
- OK, I know I’ve just told you to take water, snacks, money, phone, extra socks…but, as far as possible, travel light! Share the load by distributing essential items around the group in a good ruck sack to keep your hands free.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Show the world why you’re walking and wear something Pudsey.
- Put a checklist together before you set off of things to spot during your walk. Include specific birds and plants, stiles, sheep – as well as particular landmarks that you’ll pass. You could also include a list of games to play; I spy, the shopping list game, ten questions etc. Turn off your technology and turn on your senses.
- Make your walk count even more and pick up litter as you go (there’s a use for those plastic bags I mentioned!)
- Plot your route before you go using a good old-fashioned map – and remember to take it with you.
- Always follow the countryside code.
- And remember – you might be hiking up Ben Nevis or taking a gentle stroll with children and the dog. It doesn’t matter how long your walk is or where it takes you, what matters is that you have fun and raise money.
