Wildlife Hotel – WOW!

wildlife hotel

The children have had a great time working on the Insect Hotel with support from the Wild life Trust. The final product looks great and many parents who collected children at the end of the day were able to go and have a look and admire the children’s efforts.Thank you for all the donated items; pallets, bricks, canes etc. Remember each child can bring in an item to place on top eg. shell, stone, piece of pottery etc. We look forward to seeing what creatures take up residence over the next few days and weeks. Mrs Mahadevan will be posting some photographs soon so keep a look out on the web site.

‘Parent View ‘ on-line Ofsted questionnaire for parents

Thank you very much to everyone who went on-line to complete the questionnaire on ‘Parent View’ in time for the Ofsted inspection 24/25th September. There are now enough responses for a full summary report to be available to view. The results are overwhelmingly postitive and 100% of parents who took part would recommend our school to other parents. Fantastic! Thank you very much for your support.

Whole school trip November 26th

Whole school visit Derby Open Centre / Places of worship

                                   Tuesday 26 November 2013

(Open Centre, mosque, Sikh gurdwara, Hindu temple, Baptist church.)

Please check your child’s bag for information, contribution details and slips about the visit to Derby Open Centre and places of worship on 26th November.

As a Church of England school, we are keen to develop in our children Christian values of tolerance, understanding , respect etc. Each term we choose to focus on a different value and to recognise these in action in school and out.

It is also important for children to realise that other faiths and other Christian denominations eg Catholic, Methodist, also promote these values and that there are many similarities as well as differences in places of worship and ways of worship.

Children will need a packed lunch (no glass bottles please). If your child receives free school meals – please let the office know if you would like a free packed school lunch on this day. Children should wear school code of dress, sensible footwear and a coat as we will be walking between some of the buildings. Everyone must wear TROUSERS and have some form of respectful HEAD COVERING eg scarf or hat (not base ball cap). Shoes and socks may need to be removed in some places of worship. No spending money is needed as we will not be visiting any shops.

The coach will depart from school at 9.00am prompt (register 8.45am) and we will return to school for 3.30pm.  Children will need to be collected as usual by an adult.

Please return slips to school as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

Ofsted Inspection 24th to 25th September

Inspection of Stretton Handley Church of England Primary School by Ofsted

We have just been informed that our school will be inspected  on 24–25 September 2013. The lead inspector will be Michael Phipps. The inspector would like to know what you think about the school. Please take a few minutes to read the leaflet and letter which are coming home tonight – Monday 23rd Sept. It explains why schools are inspected, and what happens during an inspection.

Your views about the school are important to us

If you are a registered parent or carer of a pupil at the school  you can tell Ofsted your views about the school by completing Ofsted’s online survey, Parent View, at: http://www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk.

Parent View asks for your opinion on 12 aspects of your child’s school, including the progress made by your child, the quality of teaching, dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. The inspectors will use the online survey responses when inspecting your child’s school.

To register your views, you will need to provide your email address, which will be held securely. It will not be used for any purpose other than providing access to the online survey. Neither schools nor Ofsted will have access to any email addresses.

Please complete the online survey by 11am on 24 September 2013 as this will give the inspection team more time to consider your views. However, we will consider all online responses that are completed during the inspection. Should you wish to provide written comments these should be sent to the school in a sealed envelope, marked confidential and addressed to the inspection team.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the online survey.

Whirlow Farm Visit – Keep Calm and Carry On!

Whirlow Farm visit

KS2 children enjoyed a great day at Whirlow Farm taking part in WW2 workshops as part of their ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ topic, learning about life on the home front. They dressed up in 1940s clothing to be evacuated for the day and took their war time packed lunch in paper bags. The children used a hand pump to extinguish a potato incendiary bomb and took shelter when the air raid siren sounded. The farmer’s wife took them on a tour of a WW2 kitchen. In groups they kneaded dough for home made bread and set out the china for the visiting vicar, as well as having a go at some ‘make do and mend’ activities like knitting and rag rug making. It was very funny watching children peel vegetables and loading scraps into the metal pail for feeding the pigs.  Martha , the ‘land girl’ took the children on a tour of the farm. They had a go at ‘digging for Victory’ in the vegetable patch and had a look at how the farm land was used during the war.

A slideshow of our visit to Whirlow Farm can be viewed on our WWII topic page.
