Cross country and fun run competition

On Wednesday 7th October the year 2 and 3 children took part in a fun run at Tupton Hall and the year 4, 5 and 6 children took part in the cross country competition.

All together over 300 children were at the event with 26 coming from Stretton Handley! Our best ever turn out! The cross country course was very muddy and nearly 2 miles long! The fun run course was also very muddy and nearly 1 mile long!

Cross Country and Fun Run

All the children did very well and completed the course and had fun doing so (including the odd bit of mud and conker collecting!).

Overall 11 schools entered the competition and Stretton Handley came 9th. Individually in the Y456 event, TM came 27th out of all 89 girls and MB came 31st out of all 99 boys. In the fun run event, LR and LH were the first two children back for Stretton Handley.

Well done and congratulations to all that took part!

Clay Cross and District Music festival rehearsals

Clay Cross and District Music Festival rehearsals.

Rachel Wilkes has already been into school to introduce some of the songs for this year’s festival. We would like as many of our KS2 children – September Year 3, 4 , 5 and Year 6 to take part as possible. Please return permission slips to Mrs Dunbar or the school office.

We are part of Choir A and, this year, the first rehearsals in the autumn term are being held at our school – Stretton Handley, so there is no need to organise transport. However parents will need to organise to transport their children to and collect from the two rehearsals at Tupton Hall and the dress rehearsal and performance at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. Last year many parents shared transport between themselves. See details and further information on separate letter.

Red carpet movie premiere – Thursday 26th June 2.00pm

RED CARPET MOVIE PREMIERE – Thursday 26th June 2.00pm

Parents of all children in school are invited to bring their cameras and join us for the ‘movie premiere’ on Thursday afternoon. This is the exciting culmination of several weeks work and we would like all children to join in by coming to school in their smart clothes (or getting changed at lunchtime).Boys might like to wear a tie or dickie bow and girls their party dresses.

At 2.00pm parents will be able to come into the hall and photograph the children as they enter from the classrooms and walk down the red carpet to present their work.

Y4, Y5,and Y6 will be sharing/ presenting the work from their Arts Award Project. This joint project with Ashover Primary has been funded by a grant from ‘Mighty Creatives’. Sara Giddens from’ Mighty Creatives’ will be joining us during the afternoon to see the children’s work and to meet with staff to evaluate the project. The children have taken part in various workshops including film, animation and photography. They have then worked in groups to plan and make either a short film, animation or photographic slideshow. These have been edited together into a short film presentation to be shared on Thursday afternoon. (We are hoping the DVD will be available for parents to order their own copy at £3.80 each) We would like to thank Howard Pratt and Tupton Hall School for sharing their ICT facilities and resources and Tupton Hall students who supported the animation ‘Inspire’ workshops on 6th June.

Rec/ Y1, Y2 and Y3 will also be sharing their short film which is being entered into the National Society Church of England competition. The theme is about what makes a church school distinctive. The children talk about their learning and the christian values that underpin our school ethos eg creativity, perseverance. (After the competition has been judged in July, the film will be available to view on our school website.)

After the presentations there will be refreshments and a chance to look at the children’s Arts Award log books which record the Y4,5,6 children’s Arts Award journey. Children may go home with an adult after the presentations. Any children who do not have a parent attending will stay in school to be collected as usual at 3.30pm. Please let us know in advance if your child will be leaving early with another adult. Thank you.

We look forward to seeing you on the 26th at 2.00pm.

Partake Theatre Ancient Egyptian Day!

In the morning the children looked at some different artefacts from tombs, they discussed the daily life of people from different stages in the hierachy and they created and then described some smells from ancient Egypt. The final part of the morning involved dressing a child as an ancient Egyptian pharoah!

In the afternoon the children all got dressed up and took part in an ancient Egyptian burial ceremony. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and they acted their roles brilliantly.

Finally the children did an arts and crafts session and made their own Egyptian cartouche.

Partake Theatre

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a lot about the way of life in ancient Egypt.

We’d like to thank Partake theatre for the excellent day!

Partake Theatre workshop KS2 Feb 26th

‘Walk like an Egyptian’ – KS2

Wednesday 26th February

As part of our topic about Ancient Egypt we have organized a ‘Partake’ theatre workshop day in school on 26th February. (Please note there will be no violin/viola tuition on this day). Partake have visited us several times eg Ancient Greece’ ‘Victorian seaside’, ‘The Home Front’, and the sessions are always interesting and fun as well as educational.  Children will take part in a variety of workshops discovering the mysteries of an Ancient Egyptian burial ceremony – investigating and handling artefacts used in mummification ;discovering the clothing and makeup of an Egyptian princess; creating a cartouche; taking part in a atmospheric ‘burial ceremony’ where the story unfolds through the use of costume,  narration, mime, music, dance and drama. Please return slips and contributions to the class teacher or office. Thank you

A Tupton Taster and Taiko Drumming

Our Year 6s spent  Monday morning at Tupton Hall School designing ‘alternative’ movie posters using Photoshop, an industry standard software package for image manipulation and creation. Rango the Chameleon morphed magically into Ringo playing his fish guitar; Up became Pup in a Cup; Zookeeper became Lookeeper (use your imagination!); Epic became Antiseptic. Mr Cooke even made an appearance in a Where’s Mr Cooke? poster sporting a stripy red and white hat. The Photoshop session was a new workshop option offered by Tupton as part of their annual ICT transition programme for Year 6 children from feeder schools.

In the afternoon the children were joined by our Year 5 children for a very energetic Japanese Taiko Drumming workshop led by Tupton Hall’s Head of Music. The hot weather wasn’t able to dampen the children’s enthusiasm and the rhythmic pounding of drums reverberated around the Expressive Arts Department and possibly outside too through the open windows – oops! Tupton Hall runs a Taiko drumming club especially for their Year 7 students…I think they may have gained a few future recruits!

Whirlow Farm Visit – Keep Calm and Carry On!

Whirlow Farm visit

KS2 children enjoyed a great day at Whirlow Farm taking part in WW2 workshops as part of their ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ topic, learning about life on the home front. They dressed up in 1940s clothing to be evacuated for the day and took their war time packed lunch in paper bags. The children used a hand pump to extinguish a potato incendiary bomb and took shelter when the air raid siren sounded. The farmer’s wife took them on a tour of a WW2 kitchen. In groups they kneaded dough for home made bread and set out the china for the visiting vicar, as well as having a go at some ‘make do and mend’ activities like knitting and rag rug making. It was very funny watching children peel vegetables and loading scraps into the metal pail for feeding the pigs.  Martha , the ‘land girl’ took the children on a tour of the farm. They had a go at ‘digging for Victory’ in the vegetable patch and had a look at how the farm land was used during the war.

A slideshow of our visit to Whirlow Farm can be viewed on our WWII topic page.
