Topic Work

At Stretton Handley CE Primary School we have a thematic approach to the curriculum. Each class starts a new topic each term and links are made across and between subjects. Information leaflets are sent home outlining the areas covered and homework activities. Children are also encouraged to bring in items, books and information from home to share. We aim to engage the children with a range of practical experiences and activities including visits and visitors. For example, as part of our ‘Keep Calm and Carry on’ theme, children built model air raid shelters and enjoyed a WW2 day at Whirlow Farm. As part of the ‘Carnival of the Animals’ theme we had a visit from Zoolab – an interactive hands-on experience, handling different creatures. During the ‘Going for Gold’ theme there was a visit from a paralympic athlete. Children investigated Olympic torches then designed and made their own as part of home work activity and then took part in an ‘Olympic’ procession.
