Arts Trip to Sheffield
Years 2 and 3 visited the Millennium Galleries and the Winter and Peace Gardens in Sheffield as part of their art topic on buildings and sculptures. The children sketched and took photos as well as making clay figures based on "Ben-Dy Body" (a sculpture made from foam insulation tubing and wire). They had a picnic in the gardens and splashed in the fountain.
sheffield Pictures>> Schools Gala
A small team of 4 boys and 4 girls swam their hearts out this years Clay Cross and District swimming gala to gain places in the finals of many of the events. The girl's Medley Relay was particularly thrilling, despite missing out on 1st place by a fraction of a second!
mock elections The Li'l Devils!
The Upper Juniors held their own mock elections to coincide with the May General Election. Party names were decided on and candidates elected to represent them. They drew up manifestos, created banners and rosettes and wrote speeches. The candidates then presented the views of their party to the rest of the class. The secret ballot, which took place in real polling booths, resulted in a win for the Li'l Devils.
Literacy Through Drama
Ms Dianne Cooper, an English teacher from Tupton Hall School, joined us in our efforts to solve a fictional murder mystery at Stretton Handley School. The children wrote short plays about the incident and were filmed acting them out.
Who Pea-ed in that Bed!
The Junior children's contribution to this years Brackenfield well dressings, on show over the Spring Bank Holiday, was the "Princess and the Pea". We hope that by taking part in the well dressings that it will encourage the younger generation to carry on this Derbyshire tradition. Thank you to Mrs Robson for planning and organising this activity. Younger children did mini well dressings in school as part of their art class. Pictures of this years well dressing and those of previous years can be viewed on our well dressing pages.
Lea Green Residential Course
The Upper Juniors attended a 3 day residential course at Lea Green Outdoor Centre. The children had a fantastic time, trying out the Centre's new high rope course and climbing wall. They also took part in a day long walk from Lea, down to Cromford Canal for pond dipping and on past Whatstandwell for a stream walking exercise where they all got thoroughly wet climbing under fallen trees! Other activities included orienteering, hockey, trampolining and a night walk through Lea Village.
Geography Day
Year 5 & 6 children visited Lea Green again to take part in a Geography Day run by PGCE students from Nottingham University.
Activities included walks through Lea village and Bow Wood above Smedley Mills. They did field sketches, constructed "journey sticks" and learnt about sustainable development.
Splash and Dash!
Nine children took part in the 1st Clay Cross and District School's Biathlon at Sharley Park Leisure Centre. Each child had to swim 50 m and run 1 Km gaining points for their team based on their finishing position in each event. Well done to our "A" team who came third against much bigger schools - those lunchtime training runs around the football pitch certainly paid off!
Top Link Olympics
Children from Years 5 and 6 were invited to Tupton Hall School to take part in a Top Link Olympic tournament, organised by their Year 10 pupils. During the the first half of the morning, the children were trained in a variety of athletic events before competing against other schools for medals. Our children won 2 bronze and 2 silver medals.
Year 6 out 'n' about
Towards the end of term, the Year 6s put together multimedia presentations about the school, which they completed using the ICT facilities of Tupton Hall School, as part of a primary/secondary transition project. They also took part in a Design and Technology workshop at Tupton Hall School for gifted and talented pupils and went on day visits to their chosen secondary schools.
Year 6 visited this years "Safety Crew" event held at the Territorial Army HQ in Chesterfield. They enjoyed an afternoon of workshops and quizzes to find out about safety on building sites and quarries, safety in the home, contacting the emergency services, drug awareness, bullying etc.
African Dance Workshop
As a prelude to Arts Week, Debbie Hedderwick visited school to run an African dance workshop. Younger children used animals as the starting point for their movement whilst the older ones used poetry and the idea of a journey in Africa.
Arts Week
Mrs Robson organised an "Arts Week" when children worked on a wide range of art activities based on an animal theme. Please visit our Arts Week page to find out what we did and view the children's work.
Fundraising
Friends of School were busy fundraising over the summer terms. A Bag2School collection raised £68 and an after school Summer Fair raised a further £640 The fair was a great event with many activities such as beat the goalie, treasure hunt, bracelet making and face painting as well as tombolas, stalls and refreshments. The children also entertained us with songs.
Thank you to everyone who collected Tesco and Sainsbury vouchers. We have placed orders for computer and sports equipment which should arrive in school during the Autumn. Please also continue to bring in ink jet cartridges for recycling as these can be converted into cash to purchase IT equipment.
Bible Presentation
Mr Sam Fox came to school to present Year 2 children with their bibles from the George William Fox memorial fund. We treasure this annual occasion when the children receive this gift and thank him and his family warmly for their generosity.
Parlez Vous Francais
The children who have been studying French with Mrs Maryse Bradley, treated us all to a special assembly which included French songs and play acting. They were also awarded certificates of achievement. Most noticeable was the authenticity of their accents! From September, all children will be learning French as part of our enhanced curriculum.
Sports Day
We held our annual sports afternoon, as always in lovely weather! Everyone came to cheer on the competitors in races which included old favourites such as the egg and spoon, sack, obstacle and running races.
Fond Farewells
We ended term on a very happy note (but tinged with sadness!) At the end of year service, we said "Goodbye" to our Year 6 leavers, wishing them every happiness and success at their new schools. The leavers presented the school with an inscribed bench as a parting gift. We shall all enjoy sitting in the sunshine looking at the wonderful view and remembering five outstanding pupils!
At the end of the day, Purple team were the victors and the Yellow team were the runners up. Many thanks to Friends of School who organised the refreshments and raffle.
