Letters

Our Summer Term was full of fun packed activities as well as lots of hard work! We said goodbye to our Year 6 children, who have always been a great credit to the school, and we wish them every happiness in the future.

Lea Green Residential

Upper Junior children made their annual pilgrimage to the outdoor activity centre at Lea Green. Here they took part in rock scrambling, orienteering and sports. In Shining Cliff Woods the children built dens, explored their creative side with land art and constructed miniature boats out of twigs and other natural materials.

And they went in 2 by 2!

This years Brackenfield well dressings were on the theme of "Biblical Journeys". Our masterpiece was of Noah's Ark! The Junior children, led by Mrs Robson and supported by an enthusiastic band of parent helpers, produced one of our best pieces yet. Visit our well dressing pages to find out more>>.

Casualty at Stretton Handley

Eileen Beard, play coordinator from Chesterfield Royal Hospital, visited the school to talk about how accidents could happen at home and out of doors. The children found out about how people are cared for in hospital and then had the opportunity to dress up in hospital clothes and bandage each other.

Friends of School

A Bag2school collection made £120 for FSID (a cot death charity). There will be another collection in November to raise funds for Friends of School.

Back to Basics... The 3Rs!

Cycler the Robot came to school with his human from Waste Watch. He showed us how and why we should Reduce, Re-use and Recycle our rubbish.

That Scottish Play

The Upper Junior children were in fine voice, singing songs from the BBC music programme "Macbeth" for the rest of the school and their parents.
During the latter half of the term, children due to start the school in September visited and the rest of the children joined the next Year group.

Lea Green again

Year 6 children took part in a Geography Day run by PGCE students from Nottingham University. They drew field sketches looking across the Derwent valley towards Black rock studying the different land uses. They also spent time in the beautiful surroundings of Swinepark Wood looking at the impact of man on the environment and paddling around in streams pond dipping.

Chatsworth Countryside Day

Years 2 and 3 visited Chatsworth for the Schools' Countryside Day. Estate workers demonstrated the crafts needed in their jobs and the children explored the farmyard and extensive grounds

Swimming Gala

The Upper Juniors took part in another very successful Clay Cross and District Schools Swimming Gala. The children reached the finals in 5 events with the girls gaining 2nd place in the freestyle relay for the 2nd year running.

Oh we do like to be beside the Seaside!

The school's fifth visit to Bridlington proved to be just as happy and successful as the others. The sun shone, (unlike back home!) the sea and the sand gave us great pleasure and we all sang our way home after a wonderful day at the seaside!

Denby Pottery

The Reception and Year 1 Class visited Denby pottery to learn about the processes involved in producing pottery. Each of the children decorated a tile which was later glazed and sent to the school the children to take home.

Hardwick Hall

Years 2 and 3 visited Hardwick Hall to learn about life in Tudor times. The portraits were of great interest and they were fascinated to discover that rich Tudor people laid their carpets on the tables so that they would not get dirty on the floor! Tapestries were hung on the walls - these were like early wallpapers.

Sports Day

This event was enjoyed in sunshine (very lucky this year)! The usual races, obstacle, egg and spoon, sack and a "skip until you drop" contest, took place. Everyone was full of enthusiasm and made great efforts to win. The purple team were champions and the yellow team were runners up.

Pride Park

The Upper Juniors spent and afternoon at Derby County's football stadium learning about the ins and outs of running a club. Finally, the children were given the opportunity of a penalty shoot out against Jason, our guide for the day

The Champ!

...And Now the Final Curtain

The year drew to a close with our end of year service. Year 6 leavers were presented with teddies by the the younger children and received dictionaries from "Friends of School". Year 6 treated us to some beautiful music played on the chime bars. Finally Mrs Badhams thanked staff, governors, parents, volunteers and children for all they had done to ensure that we had had a very happy and successful year.
