Children from Stretton Handley Primary School have been contributing to the Brackenfield Well Dressings for over 30 years. These vibrant displays coincide with a flower festival at Brackenfield Church and are a highlight of the May Spring Bank Holiday, alongside village green festivities. The official well dressing celebration took a break after 2017. However, our school kept the tradition alive by creating beautiful boards for the annual Flower Festival in May 2018 and again in July 2023, when it was displayed outside the school. The Brackenfield Well Dressings made a comeback in 2024 when the theme was “Farming” and we chose “Old MacDonald” for our design.
This year’s theme is “Literature” and our board will be featuring the Creation Story from the Bible.
Examples of our well dressings can be seen on our well dressing gallery page.

The Making of a Well Dressing
Watch our film, ‘The Making of a Well Dressing’ made by Year 6 children for their entry to the Derbyshire Schools Digital Video Short Competition. All entries had to be filmed using a Digital Blue Movie Creator and edited using the software provided with it.
Together with other shortlisted schools, we attended an “Oscar Style” ceremony at County Hall Matlock. We were delighted to learn that we had been awarded 2nd place in the upper Junior category.
