We apologize for the extreme lateness of this newsletter, we have just been so busy!  We have decided to present the activities undertaken in categories and hope that you will all enjoy reminiscing as much as we have!

Visitors to School
We welcomed several visitors to school this year to make our learning as interesting as possible.  Mrs Gill Tanner held workshops based on different kinds of hats, and the story ‘Each Peach, Pear, Plum’.  The Footprints Theatre Trust gave us a dramatic presentation of the ‘Velveteen Rabbit’.  We also had talks from the local police, our school nurse and the fire service.
Each Peach Pear Plum Artsmark
We were very proud to be awarded our Artsmark this year. Artsmark is a national award scheme managed by Arts Council England that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts. To achieve our award, we had to consider the opportunities we offer in art, dance, drama and music and show a commitment to continued development. Two Junior children, accompanied by Mrs. Bevan and Mrs. Badhams, travelled to Loughborough town hall to be presented with the award.

TriGolf

Links with Tupton Hall
Tupton Hall school (our local cluster secondary school) provided a number of sporting opportunities for the children. A group of Year 2 children attended a Multi-sports session, run by Six Formers at Tupton Hall and budding Tiger Woods' were able to try their hand at golf during a Year 3/4 Tri-Golf Tournament, also hosted at Tupton Hall.

Dianne Cooper, from Tupton Hall English department, worked with the Upper Juniors helping them to produce, act and film short dramas based on myths.

Year 6 children attended an ICT workshop at Tupton Hall School as part of a Primary/Secondary transition project. They had fun creating stop frame animations which they brought back to show their class.

Church Activities
We were proud to be classed as an ‘outstanding church school’ in our last Church of England Ofsted inspection.  We always enjoy our church activities and this year we have visited Derby Cathedral twice; the years 2 and 3 to study Tudor buildings and their way of life, and the year 6s to spend a day preparing them for their future in secondary school.

We have also enjoyed Godly Play sessions led by Mrs Russell, a dramatic portrayal of the Easter story from a visiting theatre group, 20/20 club sessions led by James and Christine Coates and several splendid, entertaining and meaningful assemblies from Uncle Michael (Michael Fenton) and James Coates.

The Enormous Easter Egg
Wynne Frost (a friend from the village) won a very large Easter egg that she kindly gave to us to share.  Delicious!  (We enjoyed every calorie).  We had a lovely service in church when we said goodbye and thanks to our vicar Linda Liversidge and our caretaker Diana Hurst.  Our thanks were given to them with flowers and cards.  Year 2 children were presented with their bibles from the George William Fox Memorial Fund by Mr Sam Fox.  A lovely gift for life.  Many thanks from us all for the great generosity of the Fox family.  Afterwards we walked back to school to discover that the Easter bunny had hidden lots of chocolate eggs for us to find and enjoy.

The Oscars!
This years well dressing was on the theme of Christian Heritage. Junior children once again helped Mrs Robson with the design and construction of our Well dressing. Year 6 children used their film making skills, acquired during ICT lessons, to record how well dressings are made. Children in the Infant class also filmed, edited and narrated a video about their trip to White Post Farm. Both videos were short listed in the Derbyshire Digital Shorts Competition and children attended an "Oscar style" ceremony at Matlock County Hall to receive their awards: 2nd place in the Upper KS2 category and 3rd in the KS1 category! Their videos can be viewed here>>

Adventures at Lea Green
In May, the Upper Juniors enjoyed another fun-packed stay at Lea Green Centre. Adventures included den and boat building in Shining Cliff Woods, trekking from Black Rocks to High Peak Junction and orienteering in Swine Park Woods. The Children's creative flair became apparent in land art and the making of journey sticks, whilst the Low Ropes Course and "challenges" tested their problem-solving skills.
Years 4, 5 & 6 were back at Lea Green in June for a "Geography Day" organized by the Education Department of Nottingham University. The theme was "Water and Land Use" and expeditions were made to Riber village and Cromford.
This was followed later in the month by a "Science Day" with Sheffield University students, when the children enjoyed becoming scientific explorers, pond dipping and bug-hunting in Swine Park Woods.

Sporting Success!
Netball, football and gym clubs were well attended during the Spring and Summer Terms. The children had a great time when two members of Derby County Football Club came to school and worked with all classes to improve their ball and agility skills. Upper Junior children were very successful at the annual Clay Cross and District Schools' swimming gala and our Year 5/6 Biathlon Team, won the local schools biathlon competition at Sharley Park!

Sports Day this year had to be brought forward to an early morning start because of concerns of running the event during the heat wave!

WWII

The Upper Juniors studied the topic of World War II during their history lessons. A trip to Eden Camp, a museum based in an original POW camp, allowed the children to experience some of the sight, sounds (and smells!) of that time. We had a visit from Mrs Tanner who was dressed as an air warden. She led them through an air raid where the children experienced the siren being sounded and entering a very dark air raid shelter, that she had created in the classroom. The children invited old people from the village who had lived during this period, as well as parents, and entertained them to a selction of songs. They were then offered refreshments to complete the afternoon.

Friends of School Fundraising
Two collections through Bag2School managed to raise a total of £150. Collections are arranged for next year, so please continue to store your old clothes for the next one. Other fundraising activities included "Mad Hair Day" when children and staff were allowed to attend school with wacky hair styles for a small payment and our Summer Fair, when children got involved by organising and running many of the activities. Mrs Goodyear's gym club put on a great display and the children treated us to some songs. The event raised £750. Friends of School are very grateful for your continued support, which helps to fund additions to school resources and enhance the school environment for your children.

Bridlington

Brilliant Brid!
The sun always shines on us at Bridlington and this year was no exception!  As always we had fun on the sands and in the sea while some relaxed in deck chairs!  The real point of the visit was to study a contrasting environment from our own.

Cycling Proficiency
In the summer term, 6 children in Mrs Bevan’s class took their cycling proficiency test with Mrs Rouse.  The children all received a certificate for passing.  Mrs Rouse is running another course next term for year 6 starting 7th November.

Bon Voyage !
Year 6 children had the opportunity to visit their chosen secondary schools in their final term. We wished them all a fond farewell at a special leavers' assembly, when the Friends of School and the children presented them with gifts to remember us by.
