Ivy is a plant that grows up buildings and trees. Sometimes it can be a nuisance but multi-coloured ivy is often grown in gardens for decoration.
Common ivy has small leaves that are usually dark green and shiny. The thick shiny leaves reduce water loss. Young leaves have three to five lobes but older leaves may not have any lobes at all.
Ivy can kill trees by growing up it and taking the light away. It uses little rootlets to get a grip on the trunks and branches. Ivy can damage walls, but only if the wall is in bad condition.
This is some ivy growing up an ash tree in our school grounds.
The fruit is a smooth berry that contains a poisonous liquid.
