Blackthorn is a small broad leaf shrub or tree.
The leaves are small, single, smooth and shiny. They grow on thorny twigs. The wood on the blackthorn is hard and has colourful patterns. The straight stems can be made into walking sticks.
The fruit are called sloes, they are used
to make wine and sloe gin. They are green in the summer and black in the autumn. they are not very nice to eat raw as they are very sour and make your month dry out. Birds and animals, including badgers and foxes, eat the sloes and spread the seeds.
