Ash is a tree which can grow to very large sizes, (6-12 m).The branches are widely spread and the leaves are not very dense and do not cast much shadow.
Ash is a compound leaf with nine leaflets on a twig. The bark is grey and ridged.

The seeds can grow to 15mm long and they are known as keys. Each seed has a twisted vane so that it spins when it falls, to give maximum flight. They grow in bunches which normally stay on through the winter.
There is an old saying to predict the weather

Oak before ash....we're in for splash!
Ash before oak ....we're in for a SOAK!
