The alder is a large broad leaf tree which can grow to 25m tall. It grows best on wet ground. When on dry ground it doesn't grow as well.
The leaves are single, smooth, shiny and have toothed edges. Alder bark is often speckled but not very ridged.
The timber is used for carving and furniture. People used to make charcoal out of it for gunpowder.
Alder is the only broad leaf tree that has catkins and cones. The cones contain seeds. The cones turn black when they shed their seeds.
