Derby Cathedral Peregrine Falcons

Peregrine Falcons first nested on Derby Cathedral in 2006 and raised three chicks there. Web cameras set up on the Cathedral enable tens of thousands of people to monitor their progress, day and night.

During the breeding season the cameras and blog bring all the action and updates to around a third of a million visitors.

Now with live streaming cameras too!

The Derbyshire Schools Birdcam Project

See what is happening in nest boxes in other Derbyshire Schools. Although this project is no longer being funded, some schools may still be using it. You can also see pictures and videos from previous years' nesting activity in the project's gallery.

Our bird box and camera kit was purchased using Friends of School funds and was received in school on 30th March, 2007. The Gardenature kit, which includes a B&W camera with IR illumination, was purchased through TAG learning. With IR (infra red), we are able to view inside the box in poor light conditions and at night, without disturbing the birds. Further information about how we setup our bird box can be found here>>.

Our Birdcam page shows "live" snapshots of the box which are updated every 15 seconds.

Birdcam Diary 2012

Welcome to our new diary for 2012. Information recorded in this diary is taken from our birdcam blog which everyone is invited to contribute to. If you want to see what happened in the box during the four last years, follow the links above or have a look in our archive gallery. Pictures and videos for this year can be found with those from our colour birdcam on our Derbyshire Schools Birdcam Project webpages and blog.
November 2011 Both the birdcam boxes were cleaned out at the beginning of November. By the end of November, the B&W box had a small amount of nesting material in it, mainly dried grass.
9th February 2012

The B&W birdcam box has quite a bit of nesting material in it now and a Tree Sparrow was spotted visiting the box. Blue tits and House Sparrows have been seen visiting the colourcam box.

24th February 2012 The Tree Sparrows continue to bring in nesting material to the B&W box and House Sparrows have also brought a little nesting material into the colourcam box.
2nd March 2012 There is a lot more nesting materia in the B&W birdcam box now and the Tree Sparrows' nest has now taken on the same domed structure that it had last year. Birds continue to visit the other bird boxes around the school grounds.
16th March 2012 Today Mr Marriott and Mr Cooke helped carry out adjustments to some of our boxes and put a new box in the wooded area that was made by one of the children. Metal plates were added to the Sparrow terrace to help protect any occupants from predators and the box was relocated slightly higher on the building. The camera in the colourcam box was replaced with a new one to give a better picture.
